When we talk about legendary Nigerian beat makers, Nigerian music producer, Puffy Tee is definitely one of them. This genius sound maker may not be as known as the very popular ones you know as Don Jazzy and Sarz but the truth remains he has, in the past two decades, contributed immensely to the growth and development of the Nigerian music industry.
Who is Puffy Tee? Temidayo Babatope Joseph better known as Puffy T has been around for more than 20 years now. In case you did not know, he is the one behind the making of some then hit songs of London-based music group, JJC & 419. Temidayo was, not surprisingly, thrown into limelight in 2006 with his production of Olu Maintain’s single “Yahooze”- a song that became so massive it was performed in London in 2008 before UK’s then Prime Minister which he elatedly danced to.
Fast forward to 2015, DMW boss Davido wanted to introduce his debut label artiste, Mayorkun to us and wished for a monster jam. What did he do? He ran to Puffy Tee for his musical blessing. Why did he make that choice? He apparently knew he was an elder at what he does. He made the right decision as “Eleko” blew beyond what the DMW executive even expected. The mastery and combination of the piano sounds and drums is indeed exceptional it birthed a big tune. Till date, Eleko is one great, feel-good melody.
It is noteworthy Puffy Tee ‘s versatility is second to none as he has been involved in the creation of different kinds of music from almost all Nigerian music genres. Asides working with Afro Hip-Hop, Afropop and Afrobeats artistes to produce bangers he has also teamed up with a number of Fuji singers including legend, Pasuma for hits like “Kowale”. And at a point in his career, he explored Fuji music himself. The playful exploration, “Kokose”, however turned out to be a successful reality as it buzzed everywhere: on our airwaves and at parties.
This pacesetter may not be seen in the forefront of the production scene today, we must however never forget his invaluable contributions and should celebrate him at every opportunity.
